On the limitations in assessing stability of oxygen evolution catalysts using aqueous model electrochemical cells

Abstract Recent research indicates a severe discrepancy between oxygen evolution reaction catalysts dissolution in aqueous model systems and membrane electrode assemblies. This questions the relevance of widespread testing for real world application. In this study, we aim to determine processes responsible discrepancy. Experimental parameters known diverge both are individually tested their influence on an Ir-based catalyst. Ir is studied system, scanning flow cell coupled inductively plasma mass spectrometer. Real rates OER catalyst assemblies measured with specifically developed, dedicated setup. Overestimated acidity anode layer stabilization over time devices proposed as main contributors The results shown here lead clear guidelines electrocatalyst resemble realistic electrolyzer operating conditions.
